Standard PCB`s the most commonly used type of board in a number of applications is subsequently the most commonly produced type of PWB in Europe and Asia.

When to choose standard PCBs?

Let’s say that every electronic engineer aims for a standard PCB since it’s the most cost-effective design. All printed circuit board manufacturers can produce them and the major part of the world’s production is just standard PCB. The only reason for not going for a Standard PCB is if you are forced by a complicated application and/or a very advanced component. Then you may have to consider HDI, Flex, etc. More of this further down.

Standard PCB thickness

Its 1,6mm and are 1/16 of an inch. The development of the PCB required a thin board thick enough to carry heavy components and that became 1/16 inch. This became standard and was strengthened by a large range of contacts for 1.6 edge connectors.

This can probably be up for discussion, but lets say it’s a rigid FR4 PCB
without blind or hidden vias and no microwave requirements. In other words, the most common type of PCB.

What is standard PCB technology?

It’s a PCB with FR4 (Epoxy-resin and glass fibre) that is 1,6mm thick with final copper layer thickness of 35 microns, with green soldermask and white silk print. Standard surface treatment are ENIG or Leadfree-HAL.

Usually in history a lot of components was made in pitch 1/10 inch (100mil), but today there is an infinite number of different divisions of components. Mostly in metric.

What is the standard x y tolerance on a PCB?

IPC Standard does not state any default tolerance for x and y, but normal tolerance would be +/-0,1 to +/-0,2mm. Depending on size of PCB and the capability of the manufacturer.
